Mochai Kulambu
I love mochai that is also called as hyacinth beans, especially the fresh ones. Though I mostly make sambar for our daily lunch to ensure that we get our daily protein intake from the dals, I just love the gravies like this made out of the legumes itself as they themselves are a rich protein source. Whenever I buy these fresh beans from the market usually I make puli kulambu but this time tried my MIL’s recipe as it has been a long time since I made this gravy.

I’m always on the look out for easy to make and healthy snacks that I can feed the kids when they come back from school. We all love rajma / red kidney beans at home and as I often make sundal for the kids to snack on and add them to Dal Makhani to have with rotis for our dinner, these beans are always available in the pantry. So last week when I made rajma sundal, I reserved some of the rajma and made these tikkis and the kids loved it to bits.

Life is total bliss when you wind up with a cookie to have with your favorite cuppa... It gets even better if the cookie happens to be an all time favorite chocolate chip cookie. I had made this long back but unfortunately the pen drive in which I had asked Hubby dear to copy them down was lost when he took away my laptop. Though I love baking cookies, having a small oven can be a big problem as you have to bake in batches which I totally hate.

As you all know cooking fenugreek be it either the seeds or the greens are very tricky. The nutrient packed leaves may turn the entire dish tasting bitter if not handled properly. After packing tomato methi pulao to my kids, I had been trying various dishes with the methi leaves and this subzi / dry curry was also a hit with the kids.

This powder by my Grandma is very popular among the family. A very simple accompaniment to go with idli or dosas that can be stored just like the regular idli milagai podi. Hubby was introduced to this when he was served this for breakfast when we both visited her house after our marriage. Ever since that he is totally addicted. Though I love the flavor of garlic, I do not like eating it in its raw or semi cooked form as I do not like the smell it leaves in your breath after eating.

Today’s recipe is from the Chettinad region. Though this cuisine is well known for its Non-Veg dishes, I love cooking the simple vegetarian dishes as they are so packed with flavors and aroma is enough to make you hungry all over again. This recipe is from my MIL, which she learned from her neighbor, who happens to be a Chettinad Aachi. This kurma is very much different from the Chettinad Vazhakkai Curry which also happens to be the same Aachi’s recipe.

Of all the greens, next to coriander leaves my favorite greens happen to be murungakeerai aka Drumstick leaves. It could probably be due to the fact that I grew up eating it on a daily basis and let me not forget to mention that every household in Grandma’s place used to have at least 3 of these trees in their backyards and add to that my grandpa’s insistence on having to eat at least one green dish for the day, these leaves were cooked so frequently.  But of course it is very very difficult to get these leaves here now-a-days.

Chocolate Jujubes

It was Arjun’s Birthday on July 31st and as usual baked him a cake, made his favorite starters and with his best friends at home in the evening, I would say that he had a fabulous and a memorable birthday. To thank his friends he wanted to take something special for them to school. I wanted to make something with chocolate and these jujubes seemed a very good idea. One look at the way his eyes lit up when I showed him the box was enough to know how much he is going to be popular among his friends.
