Dal Paneer Masala

  • Yellow moong dal – 1/2 cup
  • Paneer – 200 gms
  • Onion - 1
  • Tomatoes - 1
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Green chili – 1
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Red chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Kasuri methi – 1/4 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee or Oil – 1-1/2 tbsp


  • Wash moong dal and pressure cook in enough water for 3 whistles. Mash and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with 1 tsp ghee or oil and shallow fry the paneer cubes for 3-4 mins over low flame till they are light golden in color. Transfer to a plate.
  • In the same pan heat the remaining ghee or oil.
  • Add cumin seeds and when it sizzles, add grated ginger, chopped onions and cook till it turns translucent.
  • Add finely chopped tomato and green chilies and sauté till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  • Add red chili powder, turmeric powder and sauté for 2 to 3 mins over low flame till the raw smell disappears.
  • Add mashed moong dal and mix well. If the mixture is too thick, add upto 1/4 cup water.
  • Cook over low flame for 2 to 3 mins. Add paneer cubes.
  • Add garam masala powder, crushed kasuri methi, mix well.
  • Cook for another minute and take off stove.
  • Dal paneer masala is ready.
  • Serve hot with phulkas or rotis.
