Ingredients
  

  • Bread slices – 8
  • Onion - 1 medium
  • Tomato sauce – 2 tbsp
  • Red chili powder – ½ tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Coriander leaves – to garnish
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 1 tbsp



Instructions
 

  • Stack 3 to 4 bread slices and using a sharp knife cut them in 1 inch thickness lengthwise.
  • Further cut into 1 inch thick cubes or bite sized pieces.
  • Gather all the pieces in a bowl and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with oil.
  • Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
  • Add urad dal and roast for a few seconds till it becomes golden in color.
  • Add thinly sliced onions, curry leaves and sauté till it becomes translucent.
  • Add tomato sauce, red chili powder, salt and mix well.
  • Add 2 to 3 tbsp water and cook over medium flame for the raw smell to disappear.
  • After 1 or 2 mins, the mixture will thicken considerably and the oil will start to float on top.
  • Add the bread cubes and toss well for the gravy to coat well.
  • Cook over low flame while tossing and mixing for 1 to 2 mins.
  • Bread upma is ready. Take off stove.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
