    Bread Upma recipe
Bread upma recipe with step by step photos. Quick and easy bread upma for breakfast or snack when you are hard pressed for time to eat right away or to pack for snack for the kids.

My kids love bread and go through a pack like there is no tomorrow. Though they love eating it in the form of sandwiches or toast or just slathered with plain jam, they love this bread upma very much.

I make it often during the week to pack for their snack box to have it during their break or when they ask for something substantial to eat after they come from their game practice.

    Bread Upma Recipe

I have kept this bread upma very simple. But if you wish to make it even healthier, you can always add chopped veggies or even eggs.

My kids do not like adding tomatoes to this upma especially when I pack it for the school. They complain that it makes the upma more lumpy and sticky, so I prefer to add tomato sauce to avoid that problem.

But if you are preparing to eat it right away, by all means add tomatoes in the place of sauce. I also do not trim the brown edges of the bread.

It not only adds more mass to the upma but also tastes good as it becomes more chewy and juicy after absorbing the sauce and flavors well.

I have used regular white bread to make this bread upma, but you can also use whole wheat bread or multi seeded bread to a wholesome and healthy breakfast or snack.

    2. Further cut into 1 inch thick cubes or bite sized pieces. Gather all the pieces in a bowl and keep aside.

    3. Heat a pan with oil. Add mustard seeds and once they splutter, add urad dal and roast for a few seconds till it becomes golden in color.

    4. Add sliced onions, curry leaves and sauté till it becomes translucent. (If you are using tomatoes, add them too at this stage and cook till it becomes mushy).

    5. Add tomato sauce, red chili powder, salt and mix well.

    6. Add 2 to 3 tablespoon water and cook over medium flame for the raw smell to disappear.

    7. After 1 or 2 mins, the mixture will thicken considerably and the oil will start to float on top.

    8. Add the bread cubes and toss well for the gravy to coat well. Cook over low flame while tossing and mixing for 1 to 2 mins. Bread upma is ready.

    9. Take off stove. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
