    homemade skin elixir
Homemade Skin Elixir that works for all skin types. How I got my cracked and bleeding skin to become soft, smooth and supple. This not only provides overall skin care but works on hair as well keeping the dryness under control and the frizz out.

And No…. Tickling Palates will always remain a food blog and it is not on its way to becoming a beauty blog. But I thought I would share this very helpful homemade skin elixir that benefited me very much so that others can also reap its rewards.

    diy skin elixir

Because of all the steroids and tetracycline that I took during my childhood, throughout my life I have suffered many side affects. One such thing is very dry skin whenever I undergo any medication. I do not use any cosmetics at all, on a daily basis, not even talcum powder. All I own is a tube of lipstick and kajal pencil which I use when I have to go out.

One such set back I faced few months ago caused my skin to go very dry because of the medications. It got worse this time with the skin cracking, peeling and bleeding. I literally wanted to claw and scratch at it all the time. The pain was totally unbearable.

    dry skin healed
I would not have shared this pic of my arm 2 months ago, as the skin was peeling off, marred with dry lines caused by scratching and broken and bleeding at places. But now it is soft and supple with no sign of dry skin and the cracks have completely healed as well.

    cracked cuticles healed
The cuticles in my both of hands looked like a wiry thread running around the finger nails with the skin around my nails peeling off. The nails themselves were brittle. The beautician at the parlour refused to thread my eyebrows saying that she was scared of tearing the skin as it was flaky all around the brows. I did not know what to do and how to handle as it never went out of my hand.

At one point my Doc advised me to heat up and make a patch of glycerin and epsom salts and keep it on the skin to cool it off so that I don’t scratch it and make the bleeding worse. An elderly nurse from Kanyakumari who treated me at the hospital, shared this tip with me advising that it could heal my skin.

Things you need to make Homemade Skin Elixir:

    Glycerin
    Rosewater
Extra Virgin Olive oil or Cold Pressed Coconut oil
    Apple Cider Vinegar
Any Aroma oil of your choice
    Spray bottle

    Glycerin

    Glycerin:

It is a clear, viscous, water soluble liquid that tastes mildly sweet. You get this in all medical shops. A bottle of 100 gms will cost you roughly Rs.20. As it is used in many beauty products, it is completely SAFE to use on skin.

Make sure that it does not come in contact with your eyes, as it burns a little making you teary eyed. You can always wash it off with water, even if goes into your eyes and no harm will come of it.

    Rosewater:

Get a good brand of Rose water. You can also use distilled water. As I do not have access to it, I used rose water. It also soothes and cools down your skin. A 50 ml bottle will cost you Rs.15 (approx). I used "Dabur" brand.

    Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO):

Olive oil is good especially for treating dry skin. If you do not have it, then use Cold Pressed Coconut oil in its place. Do not use the double refined coconut oil that you apply on hair.

    Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV):

ACV is helpful in maintaining the PH level of skin. You can also use lemon juice in its place, but you cannot store the elixir and have to use it within 2 days. Skip the ACV when using on cracked and bleeding skin as it will burn like hell. I did not include this initially and started adding it only after my skin was completely healed.

    Aroma Essential Oil:

Basically any aroma oil will do. I have just ordered Lavender oil as it is a stress buster. I will be adding Tea Tree oil in my elder one’s elixir bottle as it helps control acne. You can also totally skip adding it.

    Spray bottle:

You can get this in any shops that sells vessels and plastic ware. This costed me Rs.15 and it comes various sizes and shapes. You can store it an ordinary bottle too but spraying it directly on skin makes it easy for applying.

How to Apply Homemade Skin Elixir:

    On Face:

Close your eyes, purse your lips and spray directly on your face once or twice. Using your finger tips, massage the elixir all over your face working around the eyes and lips. Apply on your neck and the back of your neck too as it helps in removing the black mark around your neck if you happen to wear a chain always.

It may look oily after the application, but all of them will get absorbed by the skin. Initially as I wanted my skin to heal, I did this 3 times a day, but now I follow this before going to bed. In the morning, just wash with cold water.

    On Hands:

Spray directly on your arms and rub it into your skin. Pay more attention on your outer elbows as the skin there is rough. This elixir will make the skin on your elbows soft too.

    On Cracked Heels:

If you want soft feet and wish to say good bye to cracked heels, spray the elixir in your palm and rub it all over your feet paying extra attention to cracked heels. Do this before going to bed and wear an old pair socks after applying and watch your cracked heels disappear within a few days.

    On Dry Lips:

You can apply this on your dry, chapped lips also, but I do not like the weird taste, so as of now I’m using a chap stick. Earlier I used vaseline or ghee which I did not like much as well and often forgot to apply.

    It works on hair too….

    For Dry, Frizzy hair:

Mix ¼ cup of Glycerin in 1 mug of water, mix well and use it as a last rinse after washing your hair. Let it air dry. The glycerin will help lock in the moisture and prevent your hair from getting dry and frizzy.

You can also mix glycerin along with coconut oil, apply it in your hair, soak it overnight and wash with a mild shampoo in the morning. But I avoid it as I suffer from sinus and catch cold.

Benefits I saw after using this Homemade Skin Elixir:

    - My skin healed of cracks and peels that often bled.

    - No more cracked heels, dry nail cuticles or rough elbows and knees.

    - Overall my skin has become soft and supple without using a ton of costly cosmetics.

    - It has helped in removing the tan also.

    - My naturally wavy hair is soft and bouncy. No evidence of dryness or frizz.

I got a huge abscess on my leg a fortnight ago, which had to be surgically removed as it refused to away with any amount of medication. And inspite of me under medication, my skin was still healthy with none of the earlier problems.
