Gulab Jamun Spicy Curry recipe with stepwise photos. Instant Gulab Jamun Kofta Curry cooked in a spicy, tangy onion tomato gravy that is served as a side dish with rotis, phulkas or naans.
Usually koftas are made using khoa or milk solids. But I do not get sugarless khoa regularly in my place and even if I do get, it is only during festival times like Diwali.
So instead of doing khoa from scratch, which takes hours of slaving over hot stove to reduce milk, I use this shortcut method of using Instant gulab jamun powder.
As most of the brands sell their gulab jamun packets in buy 1, get 1 free offer, there is always 1 left off as we are not going to be using all of the pack at one go.
When I started, I did not have a certain recipe at hand just had an idea what I wanted the curry to taste like along with rotis. Thus I went about making this curry which turned out be a big hit with my kids and now its often made at home.
If you are calorie conscious, you can also cook the koftas in an appe pan using just few drops of oil instead of deep frying. Make sure that you add the kofta balls to the gravy just before serving, else it will soak up all the gravy and turn mushy while serving.

1. Heat oil in a pan. Add cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. Roast till the aroma arises. Add chopped onion and fry till pink. Add the ginger, garlic, tomatoes, a pinch of salt and cook till the tomatoes turn mushy. Switch off the stove.
Immediately add turmeric, red chilli, coriander powder and mix well in the heat itself.
2. Let the mixture cool down completely. Transfer to a mixie jar and grind to a smooth paste using little water.
3. Heat the remaining oil in the same pan. Add the ground paste and cook till the raw smell disappears and the oil starts to separate. Add required amount of water and let it come to a boil.
4. Crumble the instant gulab jamoon powder in a bowl without any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, green chillies, mint, coriander leaves, salt and mix well.
5. Mix into a dough using very little water. Heat a deep pan with oil. Make small balls out of the dough.
6. Deep fry them in the hot oil over very low flame. Drain on a kitchen paper and keep aside.
Add the koftas to the gravy and serve hot with chapathis or phulkas.
